The ‘Animals’ stars talk about their buzzy friendship drama, finding meaning in life and party panic.

Dubbed ‘“Withnail and I” with girls’ by Caitlin Moran, Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel ‘Animals’ was published in 2014. Now she has adapted it for a film directed by Sophie Hyde (‘52 Tuesdays’) featuring Alia Shawkat as debonair rebel Tyler and Holliday Grainger as sidetracked writer Laura. Powered by MDMA (smashed-up cola Chupa Chups), cocaine (icing sugar) and gallons of white wine (apple juice), their combined energy captures the euphoria of wild nights out in Dublin, the repetitive nature of a lifestyle of coming up and coming down, and the private desires that can drive even the closest friends apart.

Holly made a new appearance alongside Ruta Gedmintas and Luke Treadaway! She wore a black suit jacket with gold pocket details, denim cut out jeans and a white t-shirt with the slogan love more which you can buy here. HAVE you ever, I ask Holliday Grainger, flashed a pianist in real life?

“Flashed a what?” the woman sitting opposite me in a suite in a London hotel asks, sounding maybe ever so slightly horrified.

“A pianist,” I repeat.

“Oh, a pianist.” She looks relieved. “Have I ever flashed a pianist? Nope, I don’t think I ever have. I’ve never flashed a pianist.”

She pauses, has a think and then adds: “I might have flashed a guitarist.”

How was it filming all the drinking scenes in animals? there are a lot of them!

Yes, there are. We were drinking a lot of apple juice so there were sugar highs. It’s kind of interesting to track that continuity of drunkenness. You’ve just got to remember what it feels like.

Were you inspired by any of your friends, naming no names?

Definitely. It’s all from aspects of every friendship I have or from people I see.

What kind of party person are you?

Obviously I’ve been through my stages, my blowout stage — haven’t we all? — but I’m pretty good now. One thing about getting older is hangovers are harder. And you’ve got to have a lot of stamina when you’re on a shoot. I can’t burn the candle at both ends like I used to.
